It’s really really really important to stay true to yourself and hold yourself to the highest degree. And that doesn’t mean putting a lot of pressure on yourself, but just being confident in who you are and what you have to offer”
Bhavin Mistry, BA, BASc, MAN (c)
Bhavin Mistry sits down with Sarah this week to reflect on his master’s and practicum application process. Bhavin entered post-secondary education with the goal of becoming a teacher, but that changed when he took a first-year elective in nutrition. His application process was not as smooth as he’d wanted it to be, but he learned a lot about both himself and about what’s most important when building a successful application.
Bhavin began his post-secondary education at the University of Guelph completing a Bachelor of Science in Child, Youth and Family with the goal of becoming a teacher. During this program, Bhavin took an elective in nutrition and his goals began to shift. He enrolled in Ryerson’s Food and Nutrition program, which he completed in two years, and then took a year off to gain experience before applying to internships and master’s programs. During his first round of applications, Bhavin cast a wide net sending out nine applications. He would go onto receive one interview but was ultimately unsuccessful.
Bhavin was upset but not discouraged, and he set out to learn what would make his next round of applications successful. During this time he gained as much diverse experience as he could, building a professional portfolio and expanding his network, and his second round of applications landed him an acceptance to the University of Guelph’s Masters of Applied Nutrition where he is currently studying. Bhavin hopes to eventually tie all of his education together and advocate for the nutrition of children and improve nutrition education in schools.
