My hope is that people come together better than they have been, that we stop competing and we start collaborating, just like when people put two heads together, all the ideas they can come up with, imagine if we all put our collective genius together on how to move the profession forward.”
Angela Cuddy, PhD, RD
In the season one finale, Sarah is joined by Angela Cuddy, an RD with over thirty years of experience in a wide range of dietetic fields, to discuss her varied career and the evolution of the dietetics industry throughout. Angela talks about the history of dietetics in Canada, where she thinks the industry can improve, and where she hopes the future of dietetics will lead.
Angela’s interest in food and nutrition came from her nutrition-focused father. She was raised in the UK, where the field of dietetics is more readily known than it is here in Canada, and knew that’s what she wanted to do. She began her education at the University of Toronto, but the school lost its accreditation in her fourth year of study. Not wanting to have to do another full degree to become a dietitian, Angela moved to Scotland to complete her education before moving back to Canada to work.
After a job in food service, Angela also worked in acute care, long-term care, research, higher education, and health promotion. Throughout her varied career, Angela has witnessed changes, both good and bad, in the dietetics industry. She talks to Sarah about the disproportion between dietitians and the growing population, the need for some reform to reduce the competition in dietetic education, and the importance of advocacy groups such as Dietitians of Canada. Angela is hopeful for the future of dietetics and the growing interest in the profession and provides excellent advice for those looking to start their career.
