I encourage people to work at places that might not fully align with their vision because that’s where you learn the most.”
Andy De Santis, MPH, RD
Private practice RD Andy De Santis, or Andy the RD, joins Sarah on the podcast to discuss why he went private so early in his career and how he has incorporated his love of writing and communication into his career. As a three time-published author with more books on the way, Andy has created a great brand for himself as an RD and has lots of great advice for anyone else looking to do the same.
Andy grew up in northern Toronto and while he was an active kid, his involvement in sports faded in his teenage years. He says he was inadvertently inspired by an active friend to re-examine the role of fitness and nutrition in his life and he realized he needed both to be happy. Andy began his undergrad at U of T before transferring to Ryerson to become an RD. He would return to U of T for a masters in Public Health which is where he learned how to incorporate his lifelong love of writing with his desire to educate others on nutrition.
Andy began his professional career at Diabetes Canada, working on practical guidelines, but left only a year later to begin his own private practice. Building his client base was slow to begin with, but Andy wasn’t deterred and spent the extra time building his writing portfolio and social media presence. His practice begane busier every year, thanks to both his hard work in building his brand and also his desire to never narrow down what type of clients he took on. Andy is now working on several more books, as well as growing his passion project, “Kaleigraphy”.
